Emancipating 'Madame Butterfly'
Chapter in Queer/Adaptation. Palgrave Macmillan, Los Angeles, 2019
'I was especially excited by two essays. One is Nick Bamford’s account of his creation of Bangkok Butterfly, his queer adaptation of Madame Butterfly, which I found unusually and helpfully analytical for an author’s discussion of his own work. Bamford’s clear-headed summaries of his decisions about changing the setting of Madame Butterfly, adding new characters, and shifting the moral valence of familiar figures in order to preserve or develop vital elements of the story left me impressed by his resourcefulness, candor, and humility.'
